Part-Time / Seasonal | 1099 Independent Contractor
Location: Aurora, Arvada, Broomfield, Castle Rock, Centennial, Central Park, Cherry Creek, Golden, Highlands Ranch, Lakewood, Littleton, South Denver, Wheat Ridge.
Overview
Referees officiate youth recreational NFL Flag games to ensure fair play, safety, and sportsmanship. You’ll enforce rules, manage game flow, communicate with coaches/players, and report scores to the Field Manager. Season-long commitment highly preferred.
Pay
- $20–$35 per game (based on experience)
- Rate determined after verbal + written rules evaluation and proof of certifications
Key Responsibilities
- Enforce rules and penalties: Apply flag football rules accurately (flag pulls/down, illegal plays, penalties, scoring)
- Player safety: Monitor for unsafe play; enforce no-contact rules and prevent injuries
- Game management: Keep the game moving with quick decisions, clock awareness, and coordination with other officials
- Decision-making: Make impartial, timely rulings under pressure
- Communication: Clearly communicate calls and provide brief explanations when needed
- Positioning: Stay properly positioned to maintain a clear view and make accurate rulings
- Pre-game safety checks: Check player equipment before each game for safety compliance
- Sportsmanship: Manage conduct and confidently call penalties when necessary (including against coaches)
- Reporting & setup: Report scores; assist with field/equipment setup and breakdown
- Team expectations: Use a cell phone for management communication; timely weekly communication expected
- Training expectations: Attend weekly referee calls (or review recordings) and required in-person trainings
- Policy flexibility: Learn and follow any Just Compete Sports rule amendments/updates
- Punctuality: No tardies — arrive ready 10–15 minutes early
Requirements
- 18+ and able to pass a background check
- Willing to obtain NFL Flag Certification ($25 yearly investment)
- Available evenings/weekends during the season (location dependent)
- Reliable transportation + cell phone required
- Physically able to run and be on feet for games
- Professional, impartial, and composed in challenging situations
- Able to make quick decisions under pressure
- Strong communication skills
1099 Independent Contractor Requirements
This is a 1099 independent contractor position. Contractors are responsible for their own taxes.
To work as a contractor, you must:
- Complete a W-9 form
- Sign an Independent Contractor Agreement
- Provide valid identification
- Be responsible for your own federal, state, and self-employment taxes
Preferred
- Knowledge of flag football rules
- Prior officiating experience
- CPR/First Aid
Work Environment
- Outdoor playing fields
- May require working in different weather conditions
