Overview

Line Judges assist the Head Referee in officiating youth recreational NFL Flag games. This role focuses on sideline rulings, line of scrimmage alignment, spotting the ball, and supporting penalty enforcement to ensure a safe, fair, and well-managed game environment. Season-long commitment highly preferred.

Pay

  • $15-22 per game (based on experience and evaluation)
  • Rate determined after training and on-field evaluation

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor the line of scrimmage for offsides, false starts, and illegal formations
  • Rule on out-of-bounds plays along the assigned sideline
  • Assist with spotting the ball and managing down markers
  • Support the Head Referee with penalty enforcement and rule application
  • Monitor player safety and report unsafe conduct
  • Maintain proper sideline positioning for accurate rulings
  • Communicate clearly with the officiating crew regarding fouls and game situations
  • Assist with pre-game equipment checks as directed
  • Help with field setup and breakdown when needed
  • Arrive prepared and ready 10–15 minutes before scheduled game time
  • Maintain timely communication with league management
  • Remain flexible to follow any Just Compete Sports rule amendments or updates

Requirements

  • Must be 14 years of age or older
  • Available evenings/weekends during the season (location dependent)
  • Reliable transportation
  • Cell phone for communication
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to focus and make quick decisions
  • Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Professional, fair, and composed demeanor

Background Check & Base Access Requirement

Some games may be held on an Air Force Base. If scheduled at the base, you may be required to pass a military background check for base access.

  • This requirement may also apply to anyone providing you transportation onto the base (including rideshare drivers or personal rides).
  • Referees/Line Judges must be able to meet all base entry requirements when assigned to those locations.

1099 Independent Contractor Requirements

This is a 1099 independent contractor position. 

To work as a contractor, you must:

  • Complete a W-9 form
  • Sign an Independent Contractor Agreement
  • Provide valid identification 
  • Be responsible for your own federal, state, and self-employment taxes

Preferred 

  • Basic knowledge of flag football rules (training provided)
  • Interest in sports officiating
  • Prior sports experience

Work Environment

  • Outdoor youth recreational playing fields
  • Fast-paced environment requiring attentiveness and mobility
  • May require working in different weather conditions
